The Department of Lifting and Transport Machines and Engineering of Port Technological Equipment

The Department of Lifting and Transport Machines and Engineering of Port Technological Equipment of the Odessa National Maritime University has been working for more than 25 years on the problem of estimating the residual life of lifting machines and complex metal structures. During this period, scientific dissertations were prepared, methodical guidelines for estimating the residual resource were developed, practical work was done to assess the state of metalwork and its residual resource at Ukrainian enterprises and abroad, and a number of scientific publications were published in specialized publications.

The complex of performed works contains ultrasonic metal control, the detailed compilation of a three-dimensional model of metal structures, the finite element detection of hazardous zones, the conduct of a tensometric experiment, the measurement of coercive force, the chemical analysis. Based on the obtained results and dependencies, the state of the metal structure is evaluated and the forecast of the residual resource and residual strength is given.

Only knowledge of the real objective state of the machine can be a guarantee of its reliable and safe operation.

TOWING TANK NAMED AFTER PROF. A.A. KOSTYUKOV

Towing tank named after prof. A.A. Kostyukov is one of the oldest research labs of the Odessa National Maritime University. Towing tank is a structural subdivision of the Ship theory and design department.

The laboratory was commissioned in 1930 and is a gravity type towing tank (the Velenkamp system).

It includes:

  • hydro channel;
  • model workshop;
  • mechanical workshop;
  • pump room.

Towing tank is equipped with a plate type wave generation system and a special wave extinction system. The electric drive of the wave generation system has frequency control. The measuring system is equipped with modern equipment and sensors.

Experimental studies that are performed in the towing tank of Odessa National Maritime University:
  • Determination of the dependence of the drag force on the speed of the vessel, on calm water and on regular waves;
  • Possibility of carrying out towing tests in deep water and shallow water, testing of high-speed vessels;
  • Determination of hydrodynamic and kinematic characteristics of different types of moving of the vessel;
  • Optimization of ship’s hull shape;
  • Determination of the characteristics of the propeller during its movement in free water;
  • Determination of hydrodynamic pressures on the ship's hull and underwater structures.

AERODYNAMIC LABORATORY

The aerodynamic laboratory is equipped with two wind tunnels (large and small), instruments and equipment for measuring and recording. Aerodynamic laboratory is structural subdivision of the Ship theory and design department.

The large wind tunnel (LWT) has a closed loop with an open working part.

Dimensions of LWT:

  • length of 25.4 m;
  • width – 3.0 m;
  • height – 3.6 m;
  • length of working part – 3.0 m;
  • diameter – 1.75 m;
  • speed of air flow 8-70 m/s.

The small wind tunnel (SWT) has a similar LWT scheme, but it is executed on a scale of 1: 5, with a maximum air speed of 30 m/s.
Experimental studies that are performed in the aerodynamic laboratory of the University:

  • Determination of the aerodynamic coefficients of bodies of various shapes;
  • Visualization of the flow past bodies;
  • Simulation of flow around in the presence of a free surface (screen).
